We were very pleased to see that our Faculty of Humanities (人文学部) was ranked 43rd in Japan for numbers of graduate students finding employment in 2010. In fact, we were the highest ranked faculty in Kyushu!
On July 22, a TV crew from RKB visited our campus to film one of our students, Yuka Sakaguchi. Yuka is a member of Kitakyushu City’s soccer club’s cheerleading team, and RKB are producing a programme about her life. On June 19, the Baiko Gakuin University ESS held its 2010 Mackenzie Cup speech contest. The two speeches available to students were John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama’s inaugural addresses. Two of our 1st-Year students, Satoko Murata and Akiho Tsuji took part. Here are the results:

Our 4th Zion Cup English Contest was held on Saturday, October 17. The previous day, a semi-final contest had been held, and the best 3 students in each year group selected.

Twelve students from our “Bunka Koryu” course are currently studying at Vancouver Island University in Canada for the next 3 weeks. You can follow their progress on our Travel Blog. They are being accompanied by Malcolm Swanson, and will return on September 13.

On July 22, we were fortunate to see a solar eclipse. This was the first total eclipse in 46 years, and in Kitakyushu we were able to experience around 90% of a total eclipse. The next time one will come to Japan will not be for another 26 years!

On Saturday, May 30, Seinan’s ESS member, Mami Adachi took 1st place in the 21st Mackenzie Cup Recitation Contest at Baikou Gakuin University in Shimonoseki. Mami, a 1st-year English Department student, performed Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech.
