All about Professor Hashimoto

1973年、米国オレゴン大学(U of O)でレトリック/コミュニケーションを修め(MA)た教授は院生時代にはGraduate Teaching Fellow としてYoko M.McClain先生<夏目漱石のお孫さん>のTeaching Assistant を務めました。1974年から本学で長年に渡って教育と研究に携わってきた教授はウイスコンシン大学(マディソン)のコミュニケーション学部のHonorary Fellow, またマーサー大学(ジョージア)では交換教授として本学でも担当の「異文化コミュニケーション」及び「レトリカル・クリティシズム」の教鞭を執りました。また同時期にジョージア州メイコン市の名誉市民を授かりました。日本コミュニケーション学会(CAJ)の会長を務めた同教授は下記のような教育・研究活動の一端に加え、多数の論文発表、10冊を超える書物の出版があり、また学会賞、学会貢献賞などを関連学会より受賞しています。
学生に語る同教授の親しみある持論の一つは“言葉の学習は始まりがあり、終わりはない。母語たる日本語でさえも未だに学習の途上にある。ましてや外国語としての英語は云うまでもない”との弁です。大学の研究室には多種多様な梟の置物があちこちに鎮座しています。機会あれば足を運んでみては如何でしょうか。余暇には野鳥の観察が趣味でもある教授です。
Professor Mitsuhiro Hashimoto has been teaching at Seinan Jo-Gakuin University since earning a master’s degree in speech with an emphasis on rhetoric and communication in 1973 at the University of Oregon, where he at the same time served as a teaching assistant(graduate teaching fellow)to Yoko M. McClain, a granddaughter of Soseki Natsume. He was an Honorary Fellow at the University of Wisconsin and an exchange professor at Mercer University, Macon, Georgia where he taught intercultural communication and also rhetorical criticism, which are the same courses he has been teaching here at Seinan for many years. Also at this time he received the credit of an Honorary Citizen of the City of Macon, Georgia. Professor Hashimoto, the ex-president of the Communication Association of Japan (CAJ), is the author of many professional articles, including more than 10 books, in addition to the following partial list of academic and/or educational activities. During his long and dedicated career, he has been the recipient of the Award for Publication on Communication, a Distinguished Service Award for the CAJ, among some other awards.
His pet theory is “Language learning has a beginning but no end”. He adds, simply put, “We are still in the process of learning even our mother tongue, Japanese, not to speak of English as a foreign language.”
A lot of cute ornamental owls take their perches here and there in his office on campus. In his leisure time he enjoys bird-watching.
