Monthly Archives: February 2014

From today, we are going camping for 2 nights, so there will be no posts until Sunday.

International Evening

The NMIT student association, Sanitii, regularly holds events for students. On Wednesday night, they held an International Evening, inviting all the international students and their home stay families for an evening of food and fun. Everyone brought along food, plus there was a BBQ available, and we played games and listened to a performance by NMIT’s Maori cultural group.

Golf afternoon

The students have been working and studying hard, so we decided to have a recreation activity this afternoon. Therefore, we went to play golf. Lots of fun on yet another gorgeous day in Nelson. Yuka and Chikano won the prizes for the closest to the “Hole-in-One” contest. Today was also Yumi’s birthday, and we celebrated with a surprise cake.

Maori Culture Class

Today’s activity after classes was a lesson on Maori culture – specifically Poi making. Poi means “a ball on a string” and is used in many Maori dances and performances. Holly came and taught us how to make a poi, then she showed us how to do some simple dances. She finished with a short performance of her own.

Lazy Sunday

Lazy Sunday for students today where they were free to explore Nelson. A few of them climbed to the Centre of New Zealand with Malcolm for a picnic lunch. Other weekend activities included Opera in the Park, Sunday Market, and travelling with families.
