New Zealand
Next February, 20 of our students will travel to Nelson in New Zealand. Now it is spring there – here is a view of a cherry tree outside the Language Centre in NMIT where our students will study…
After 3 smooth flights we all arrived back in Fukuoka safely to be met by friends, family, and Nishioka-sensei. It was great to be home, but we all miss our Nelson life and the memories we made there.
Thanks to everyone in Nelson for making us so at home during our stay… we miss you all!

On Thursday, March 17 a ceremony was held to finalise the signing of an agreement between Seinan Jo Gakuin University and NMIT. On Tuesday, we held our final activity for this trip – a visit to the Riverside Community in Upper Moutere. This is a community created for peaceful coexistence, and showed the students another side to New Zealand life. Becuase of its clean water and beautiful beaches, the Abel Tasman National Park is home to some of the best kayaking in the country.

After classes today, we visited Founders’ Park [website]… a historical site where many of the old buildings from Nelson have been moved and preserved. The students all completed a quiz which Gertrude had prepared.

Because we had to shorten our Wellington trip by a day, we decided to take the students to Takaka in Golden Bay. A VERY long trip – about 6 hours in the vehicles, and a lot of it over winding roads. In Takaka we were able to look around the township and then visit Pupu [...]
In the centre of Nelson’s downtown area is the beautiful Nelson Cathedral. It stands over the shopping area, and its bells can be heard throughout the city. Today we went for a tour through the inside.

Nelson stands at the geographical centre of New Zealand – and in the city there is a steep hill with the spot clearly marked. Today was a beautiful clear day so we spent the afternoon walking to the top and enjoying the magnificent view.
