The way of spending Christmas in New Zealand was quite different from that in Japan. First of all, many people in Japan spend Christmas with their friends and loved ones, but in New Zealand, people always spend Christmas with their families. I was also invited to a Christmas party by my host family as a member of their family. On the night of the 24th, we had dinner from around 8:00 p.m., and then waited for the clock to strike midnight while chatting with everyone. When the date changed, everyone said âMerry Christmas!â and the host families hugged each other. Then we went to the Christmas tree and exchanged gifts. I was very happy to receive gifts from my host family. For food, we ate ham, salad, and pavlova, a kind of meringue cake that originated in New Zealand. It was a wonderful Christmas where we were able to experience the warmth of our host families.
